What kind of paint to use in the bathroom?

A. Elise

I currently rent and I live in a house where all the renovations are done by someone who doesn’t know how to do them (ie halfassedly!). So this means that I don’t have to worry about my own touches being perfect… oh, if you could only see the paint jobs in my house. My bathroom is currently painted in a flat white color… I don’t know much about paint, but there’s no shine to it or anything. It’s less glossy than the paint used in my bedroom.

I have about half a can of blue flat paint that I’d like to paint the small bathroom with, but it’s not really for bathrooms. So my question is…

I know they make specific paints for bathrooms, but, can I do it anyway and expect it to be just fine for at least a year or so? Sure maybe it’s not the best choice for a bathroom, but is it really going to be that terrible? Or can I go ahead and do it anyway? The flat paint in there now is holding against moisture just fine.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Is contractor responsible if damage is done during renovation in older home?

Janet Z

I have a home built in 1978. A contractor was hired to replace the floor in the upstairs bathroom and add tile. Apparently the plumbing code has changed since then and the contractor was using nails for the cement board based on today’s building code and punctured a hole in the plumbing. He immediately knew he hit a pipe but claimed that the pipes were too close to the floor and it wasn’t his fault. The contractor has completely denied negligence saying it isn’t his fault that the pipes were located where they were. I say, how was I suppose to know, I’m just the homeowner, not the expert. There was over $20K in damage to the house from the water leak. My homeowner’s insurance covered about half of the damage. I would like to be compensated from the contractor for the remaining money that I have lost but they continue to deny negligence. Any thoughts? Would I have a case in small claims court? Is the contractor negligent?

How can I decorate a basement apartment?

AllieKat

Adding to my troubles-we have wood walls in all but the bathroom and kitchen! Since we rent this apartment, and are on a budget, major renovations are out of the question for the most part. Any idea of how to brighten up and decorate/organize such a place? It’s kind of drab and dismal…I would love track lighting but know the landlord would never in a million years pay to have it installed lol. Just looking for some interesting and creative ideas on ways to decorate such a place.

What are some of the reasons a room in an old house would be completely sealed off when you buy it?

Mother Funker

My grandmother purchased an old house to renovate, when she started doing her renovations she noticed that there was a window leading to a room that had no door opening inside of the house. She found the wall where the door should have been and took it down to discover a bathroom. What in the world would make a sane person essentially eliminate one of the rooms in their house, Do you think someone may have died in that bathroom

Should I hire a maid to help me clean my bathroom?

A. W

I have a really old tub, sink and toilet, but I have to save money to get a full renovation. Whenever I clean the tub and shower, it never looks any cleaner and the finish on the tub seems to have worn off with each scrubbing. I have severe allergies, so I really can not use strong cleaning products. I just get frustrated with how bad it looks even after I clean it. Do you think a merry maid could give an old bathroom a sparkle or would that job be too small? I actually feel bad asking someone else to come in and clean up even though I am paying them.

What are the best renovations to make in a small condo?

Joie

I bought a small condo conversion last year in a very desirable neighborhood. I intend to live in it for a while, but I would also like to spruce it up while I am here and possibly add some value. I know in houses it’s a good idea to invest in the kitchen and bathroom, but does that hold true for small condos? What are the best types of renovations to make? The condo is pretty basic right now – carpeting, simple fixtures, very basic kitchen with an old laminate countertop. I would prefer to renovate wisely.
