I have a really old tub, sink and toilet, but I have to save money to get a full renovation. Whenever I clean the tub and shower, it never looks any cleaner and the finish on the tub seems to have worn off with each scrubbing. I have severe allergies, so I really can not use strong cleaning products. I just get frustrated with how bad it looks even after I clean it. Do you think a merry maid could give an old bathroom a sparkle or would that job be too small? I actually feel bad asking someone else to come in and clean up even though I am paying them.

Your tub may need to be repainted. If you feel like having a maid come in because of your allergies, that seems fine. However, I don’t think they will come for such a small job. I’m sure they have minimums. You’re better off to find someone who does it independently. Also, try allowing the products to soak for awhile. That should help and reduce the amount of time you spend in contact with them.
It sounds like your tub needs to be reglazed. It is usually cheaper than remodeling and will make your bathroom look instantly better.
Save yourself the money. Stop using abrasive cleaners, first. They will ruin the finish on your fixtures.
Use only what you know you aren’t allergic to. Even shampoo will work.
DRY YOUR SINK AND TUB/SHOWER every time you use them. I keep a stack of inexpensive white washcloths in a pretty basket on my counter to use on my sink. I use a microfiber cloth I bought in the automotive department at Costco to dry my tub/shower.
If you have a problem with mildew stains, pay someone to replace the grout and caulk. Then seal the grout. AND KEEP IT DRY.
I don’t think a maid could do anymore than you do; why don’t you look into having the tub reglazed?
