Recently did a bathroom renovation, installed new plumbing. When we started filling up the tub with the spout on, water trickles out the shower head. Take the spout off, the shower no longer leaks. What is going on?
It is a Delta, if that matters-seems like Delta has a lot of problems with this? I heard it could be a diverter (sp?) or water pressure.
So when you say diverter, the thing that you pull up on the spout to make the shower come on instead of the tub faucet?
I checked and the unit was installed correctly, as in all the rough plumbing.

Sounds like the diverter was installed upside down.
The part that the handle connects to is the diverter the spout is a diverter spout since it has the pull diverter on it. The diverter is disigned to direct water to the spout, water is like electricity in that it will follow the path of least resistance and the way they design it the least resistance is down to the spout, once you pull the knob on the spout the path of least resistance changes and forces the water up to the shower head. If the diverter is installed upside down the path of least Resistance changes letting some water go to the shower head and some to the spout because of gravity. Check the diverter and look to see up or top printed on it, if it is right then it could be a water pressure issue. You can check that by getting a guage at lowes or HD for 2 or 3 bucks and screw it onto a hose bib and turn it on. it shouldn’t be any more than 75psi.
it is is the diverter.it may have some garbage is the seat thay are not that expensive to replace and it does not have to be a delta
