When should a water damaged ceiling be replaced ?

neutralparty

OK…so, bathroom renovation project on main floor. Project was 98% complete. Husband was replacing faceplates on bathub without turning water off at main. He takes off the knob that controls the water, and it honest to goodness looked exactly like an open fire hydrant. I estimate that we were losing at least 30 gallons of water per minute (probably more). Anyway, when all was said and done, our lower level ceiling was SOAKED (soggy), and there was water on the floor that had seeped through to the garage. So far, the ceiling does not appear to be saggy or falling, just very moist.

We disconnected power to the affected lower level rooms, but the question is, do we need to tear out the ceiling and walls to repair this or should we just be able to repaint when it is all dry? I realize that mold is a particular concern, so is there a way we can prevent mold without tearing the whole thing out?

  1. hello my name is Chris. Im a Class “A” contractor with Walls Custom Builders. You should tear out all sheet rock and insulation that is in infected area replace as soon as possible due to prevention of mold. Are you in the Richmond, VA area. If so you can call us (804)350-0761 ask for Mr. Walls or Chris

  2. I would suggest getting a dehumidifyer in that room as quickly as possible. If the room is dry enough you may avoid the mold issue.

We had a similar issue and did not get to it for several days and had to rip out everything and there was black mold in all the walls.

Not good so get it dried out and then I would still remove one small section of the lower wall after a week or so and see that there is no mold growth. If there is none you should be find. If worried call in an expert.

  3. If the hole thing was wet and is still wet? You should take it down. It`s not sagging now but it will. And it will smell later to. And you will get mold. The crappy thing about mold is it could be in the ceiling and never see it. Black mold is very dangerous. Maybe if you could dry it quick but it only takes two days for mold to start growing.
