How do I fix this leaking shower?

Amber E

I have a shower stall in one of my bathrooms that is leaking really badly at the shower head and intermittently at the cold faucet. The shower head is REALLY old, and I can’t get a replacement because it is a ball-joint, not a regular shower head. (It is not leaking between the arm and the shower head, just out of the head). It was a drip for a while, but now is alsmost a constant trickle of water–which is really annoying.

The water in at the faucet is intermittent and seems to leak from 2 places, behind the entire fixture, and between the turnable part and the stationary part. It is not constant, and is only a drip when it does leak.

I am not terribly skkilled with tools (husband even worse), but I wondered what I could do to stop these annoying drips!

Thanks for your time.

Walk in Bathtubs are the Newest Trend in Home Improvement

Jane Worthington

Want to know what the latest trend in bathroom fixtures is to keep up your home? Walk in bathtubs! Walk in tubs are making quite a splash in the home improvement and remodeling world, because the fact of the matter is that we will all need walk in bathtubs someday, and for many people it’s not that far off. If you think about, it’s a pretty clever idea. If you’re going to the trouble and expense of buying and installing a new bathtub, it just makes sense to go with a walk in tub that will last for years and years, so you don’t need to replace it later.

The great thing about walk in tubs is that you can get them in different styles. You can get a bathtub that is built into the wall, or you can go with a freestanding bathtub that doesn’t require all that installation. Either way you go, most walk in tubs come with an easy open door so that you can step in and out of your bathtub with complete ease. With a walk-in tub, you don’t have to lift your leg or hip high to climb in or out of it, as you do with standard bathtubs. Walk in bathtubs are made so that you can just walk in and walk out of them, making them much safer for family members of all ages.

Walk in bathtubs don’t cost much more than traditional acrylic or clawfoot bathtubs either, making them a smart choice for your bathroom remodel. A bathtub isn’t something we replace everyday, in face most of us hold onto them for an average of 20 years and only replace them if they break or we want to upgrade our bathrooms. You can think ahead and save yourself money by making your next tub a walk in model. That way, you won’t need to replace it in eight or ten years, and it will be give you peace of mind. This is one reason walk in bathtubs have become the newest trend in home improvement projects, because they are wonderfully luxurious, safe, and save you money in the long run.

So if you are thinking of tackling your bathroom and replacing that old standard bathtub, consider a walk in bathtub. This is the smartest way to get the most safety, beauty, peace of mind and more money in the long term.

How To Use Bathroom Vanities And Faucets So Your Bathroom Renovation Packs The Most Punch

Vikram Kumar

Home renovation experts will tell you that a bathroom renovation is one of the best ways to add value to your home. Because more people are spending time in their bathrooms these rooms are becoming increasingly more lavish. By choosing to spend more money on bathroom vanities and faucets, you can make your renovation dollars stretch further and get a better return on your investment.

Whether it is warm and welcoming or streamlined and spa-like, a bathroom can make a statement about you and your personal style. Accessories can help but it is the structural elements of the bathroom that make a statement and it is these that you should be spending your money on.

Bathroom vanities are important for storage and esthetics. There have been a number of trends lately in bathroom vanities. Some of the most popular ones include dual sinks or vanities where the sink actually sits on top of the counter instead of being recessed. You might look at choosing vanities that look like beautiful custom made furniture and storage units that coordinate with other pieces of furniture that are in the room as well.

You want to make sure that the bathroom vanities you are choosing are beautiful and functional. They should have enough drawers and cupboards to store your items. Consider getting drawers that have organizers built in. This can be especially important if you regularly put make up on in your bathroom. Not having enough storage in bathroom vanities can be one of the biggest complaints many people have about the rooms in general.

You also need to make sure that you are choosing faucets that are functional as well as beautiful. Faucets can be found in a number of styles and are now being created with features that make them much easier to use. They can range from highly modern to beautiful and classic, and may be low and lean or high and arched.

Keep in mind that the style of the faucets you choose should coordinate with the other furnishings and elements in the room including ones used on the bathtub and shower. You don’t want ones which are very modern if all other elements in the room are classic. You want to choose good quality faucets that will not break down after only a short period of time. This does not mean that you need pay top dollar but you should pick a manufacturer with a reputation for making quality products.

When picking faucets, you need to know whether you need single hole faucets or widespread faucets. If you are getting one with a single hole, that means that the controls are on the faucet itself and it is all part of one unit. Widespread faucets have taps which are separate. If you are replacing the sink at the same time, you may have more choice but if the faucets are the only things you are replacing you may need to choose a different model but in the same basic style.

The right choice in your bathroom can mean the difference between adding value to your home and one which can actually cause your house to remain unsold.

How to Budget on Bathroom Renovations

Sonia

The bathroom is a cluttered, tiny room off the bedroom where we rush to brush, shower, and fix ourselves before we set off for work. Nevertheless, it could also be a haven, a place of retreat after a hard day at work. A place to soothe the soul and calm the nerves. This can be done, and fits any budget.

The second most popular remodelling project after the kitchen is the bathroom upgrade. However, the expenses involved could be quite staggering—with an average over $10,000! Wait, do no let this discourage you from renovating your baths, following are some tips on doing it that fits your budget.

1. Determine a specific budget and plan. Consider your funds and find out how much you can spend on a bathroom renovation. It is helpful to do some window-shopping for fixtures and accessories and compare quality and prices.

2. The answer to a tight budget is taking it a step at a time. If you have the funds to spend on a bathtub, once this is accomplished, you could proceed to the next area. Each time you finish, it is wise to wait until you have the funds available to start on the next one. This will lessen the headaches involved in renovations.

3. Shop for items that you need during off-seasons where stores might offer discounts or sales. This could be during the summer or throughout the holidays where most people would not think of renovating their bathrooms.

4. You can choose to do it yourself.  You can replace worn towel bars, faucets, medicine cabinets, mirrors and light fixtures by yourself.  For a more flattering look, add down lights and put them on dimmers. The bathroom door could be replaced with one that has a full-length mirror set with new knobs and handles. A fresh coat of paint will do the trick of lighting up the look of your bathroom enormously. Nevertheless, before you proceed to do it yourself, consider your experience. Usually, if you do not have any experience or knowledge in bathroom renovations, you could end up spending more money than hiring a professional because of the many mistakes you make. Consider your options and decide wisely.

6. Make use of low-cost accessorizing. The key to this is to make use of the things you already have. Play it with colors. If you have a gold tub, toilet and sink, you can make it your color scheme.  Matching dominant colors will enable you to create a calm and uniformed look in your bathroom.

7. Try reglazing your tub instead of replacing it, most especially if it is still in a good working condition. You will be able to save more than half the price of a new tub and at the same time, lessens dust.

8. Use cultured marble sheets instead of a ceramic tile. Marble sheets are a good choice for your tub surroundings. They are easier to clean and can save you a lot on labor costs. Fiberglass on the surrounds is less costly than using tiles.

9. Make a list of what is really needed before you do a renovation. You might add accessories and fixtures that you do not necessarily need, affecting your budget.

If you plan to do a renovation of your bathroom in the following weeks or months, the tips above can serve as your guide to save money. You may want to consider all of them, some, or even just one idea. Whatever you decide, the most important thing is you can make a renovation of your bathroom on a budget that suits you.

How Much Return on My Money Should I Get – With a Bathroom Renovation When I Sell My House?

Leaftech

If you are a homeowner, then you have probably already considered some type of renovation to one of the rooms said to bring in extra money when it comes to a sale. The two most recommended rooms when it comes to renovations, of course, are the bathroom and the kitchen. In this article, we are going to take a look at what you can expect when it comes to a return on a bathroom remodel when you sell your home.

First of all, consider the type of renovation

Renovations, of course, come in many different types. If you have an older home, you might HAVE to renovate your bathroom in order to have any shot at a sale at all. In this case, the return on your investment as we discuss below will be much higher, simply due to the fact that your house won’t sell without it.

Otherwise, we are left with two types of renovation, the minor remodel and the major remodel. In the minor scenario, all you want to do, essentially, is upgrade your bathroom with new cabinets, fixtures, and so on. Your main costs will be in the price of the goods you install. Generally these fix-ups will cost around $10,000.

In a major renovation, you have to factor in the costs of labour as well. Major renovations mean knocking out the walls, re-doing the plumbing and all the tiling, and so on. It can get quite pricey, as there are a number of different professionals involved, and you can expect to double up on your minor remodel price to at least $20,000.

So what’s the return?

Generally speaking, a remodel of any type on one or more bathrooms in a home will yield an 86% rate of return on the sale. So if you spend $20,000 on your remodel, you can expect to get $17,200 added to the value of your home because of it.

Of course, that is not all there is to the return. The customers who you market your home to will certainly determine the true value of your renovations; demographics will determine how appealing your bathroom is and thus the return yield. Still, a bathroom renovation, as long as you consider it carefully, is acknowledged by most experts as a great way to significantly up the value of your home overall.

I’m re-doing my whole bathroom?

pinkerton

So I’ve moved into my boyfriend’s recently, and he’s given me one of the 2 bathrooms to completely make over. It’s a pretty small bathroom; a walk-in shower, a toilet, a sink. That’s about it. I’ve become pretty zealous in all of my renovation decisions, and because I don’t have much money, I’m going to be doing this all by myself. So to make sure I don’t completely mess up the whole room, I figured I should ask a few people how to do things first! So here are the main two things I’ve found to have trouble with:

1.) There’s a towel bar right behind the toilet (a pretty inconvenient place for a towel bar if you ask me), and I want to remove it. It’s a plastic towel bar within a ceramic base, which is somehow connected to the dry wall. I’m guessing it’s glued with some sort of… glue… So how would I go about removing it, and then how would I go about repairing the most likely ripped dry wall? I also am having the same issue with my ceramic toilet paper holder, which is connected to the dry wall in front of my toilet (another strange location if you ask me). I’m guessing that this would be removed the same way as the towel rack? If not, please inform me!

And 2.) The interior to my walk-in shower is made up of some sort of fake marble sheeting. It’s not tiled; it’s just straight sheets of this fake marble-looking stuff. And I absolutely HATE it. There are 3 sheets of it, on the 3 walls surrounding the shower, and then the door is made of frosted glass. I can stand the frosted glass, but I want the bathroom to be pure white. So I have two options that I see: I could gut the shower and re-tile it. OR… I could save myself to trouble and paint it solid white. Now, see, I have no idea if this is a possibility. And if it IS!! how would I go about doing that? Like what kind of paint would I use? And if the painting idea is a shot in the dark, how can I remove these sheets of fake marble that are about 2 feet talller than me and about twice my weight? I have no idea how there attatched, might I add. So yeah…

Thank you so much for helping me with my little precidament!!!
