The bathroom is very small maybe 8×10 at BEST.

It needs to be completly gutted.

Only half the bathroom will be tiled (floor and half the shower area)

I am supplying the fixtures, toilet, new tub, and tile.

The contractor supplies the rest.

Approx what should I expect to pay? What have you paid in the past?

NYC Landlord is renovating bathroom. Possible Warranty of Habitability violation?

csam1227

Landlord said renovation will take one week. In the meantime we (a family of four) were told to use the bathroom and kitchen sink (bathroom has no sink) in vacant apartment across the hall. Here’s the problem: The entire apartment is under-construction and completely filthy. It’s filled with dust and reeks of mold. Wood planks, paint chips and huge dry wall pieces are everywhere. Nothing is clean and the air is thick. We also had our water shut off in our apartment for the bathroom reno., so we go back and fourth to brush our teeth/ wash our face/ bathe and fetch water to boil back in our apt. The landlords workers already skipped out on work 2 days in a row (we actually had to call the workers to find out what was up but they insisted everything will be done by Sunday) I’m getting worried and disgusted at how much more I can take. I’m sure landlord would not dare step foot in the vacant apt for his personal care…Should I sue? Also, landlord has a habit of not being on top of repairs

London Builders: Bathroom Microclimate and Placement. Part Two

Arthur Prudent

A suspended ceiling is very functional in the new bathroom. Good looking, it can hide electric wiring, ventilation pipes, and etc. A suspended ceiling can be of different types: metal or moisture-resistant gypsum-plaster.

For the ceiling area increase, suspended ceiling boards should be mounted perpendicularly (a 90-grade angle) to the long wall or diagonally. For creation of the effect of a high ceiling, mirror boards or white mat boards with mirror fillets between them are used.

A moisture-resistant gypsum-plaster ceiling can be made multilevel one of any shape: semicircle, diamond-shaped, oval, circle, zigzag lines with decorative cornice, into which daylight lamps can be installed. Spotlights can also be installed in the gypsum-plaster ceiling.

Let’s turn to the lighting now. A new bathroom should be lit brightly. Bright light arises bright feelings, feelings of protectiveness and joy. A simple wall lamp creates a lot of unnecessary shadows, that is why it is better to replace it with spotlights, built into the suspended ceiling. There exist spotlights of various shapes and colors, with halogen bulbs and incandescent lamps. You should choose the type of light you need before making a renovation of your bathroom. Halogen bulbs produce sharp directed ray of light. If you need to highlight some place in your bathroom, it is reasonable to use a rotary lamp with halogen bulbs. You can get softer light out of halogen bulbs with the help of glass diffuser, preset in the shape of the lamp. Incandescent lamps produce more uniformly diffused, soft and bright light. For a bathroom lighting mirror with the built-in lamps will also fit.

The best location for the mirror is above the bathroom sink. The distance between the bottom of a mirror and the top of a sink should be about 15cm; this will help to avoid splashing. In addition, mirror is the best and indispensable material for expansion of bathroom space. Today there exist a variety of mirror types, however, the most optimal and functional of them is the mirror with lamps and shelves for various toilet articles.

It is possible to add variety to the new bathroom with the help of differently shaped niches, as well as decorative glass blocks. It is also advisable to decorate the bathroom walls and floor with flowers in the pots, taking into account, that for some species of plants such microclimate is perfect for constant growth and blossoming.

While making bathroom renovation one should pay attention to the following main stages.

The bathroom floor. The most important and difficult subject of the bathroom renovation is the floor damp proofing. Tiny cracks can lead to a damp proofing malfunction, which will result in leakage and fights with neighbors.

Pipe run. It is important to carry out pipe and new bathroom equipment assembly in a quality manner, in order to avoid leakage.

Making a plan of bathroom renovation, don’t forget about ventilation. If the bathroom has poor ventilation, condensate will appear on the walls and ceiling, mould will appear as a result of it, and the whole bathroom renovation will come to nothing.

Bathroom renovation and decoration give place to unbounded flow of fantasy. You can achieve any effect, necessary exactly for you!

Will my pipes rust more?

John

I’ve been doing this long drawn out renovation to my master bathroom, so it’s been about 3 years since I’ve been able to run water throught the pipes in that room. These are steel pipes by the way. I just capped the pipes off where the sink and toilet would normally connect. Because I’m not running water through these pipes (although they are holding water), will they corrode more quickly? Am I to expect some really thin walls in these pipes by now?

Is contractor responsible if damage is done during renovation in older home?

Janet Z

I have a home built in 1978. A contractor was hired to replace the floor in the upstairs bathroom and add tile. Apparently the plumbing code has changed since then and the contractor was using nails for the cement board based on today’s building code and punctured a hole in the plumbing. He immediately knew he hit a pipe but claimed that the pipes were too close to the floor and it wasn’t his fault. The contractor has completely denied negligence saying it isn’t his fault that the pipes were located where they were. I say, how was I suppose to know, I’m just the homeowner, not the expert. There was over $20K in damage to the house from the water leak. My homeowner’s insurance covered about half of the damage. I would like to be compensated from the contractor for the remaining money that I have lost but they continue to deny negligence. Any thoughts? Would I have a case in small claims court? Is the contractor negligent?

Should I hire a maid to help me clean my bathroom?

A. W

I have a really old tub, sink and toilet, but I have to save money to get a full renovation. Whenever I clean the tub and shower, it never looks any cleaner and the finish on the tub seems to have worn off with each scrubbing. I have severe allergies, so I really can not use strong cleaning products. I just get frustrated with how bad it looks even after I clean it. Do you think a merry maid could give an old bathroom a sparkle or would that job be too small? I actually feel bad asking someone else to come in and clean up even though I am paying them.
